Female pilot clouds army`s

45th birthday

Lieutenant Rose Katila smile broadly after landing safe at the Air Wing`s airport in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

The Tanzania Peoples’ Defence Forces (TPDF) yesterday marked its 45th birthday since it was established from the mutinous Tanganyika Rifles in Dar es Salaam, with a youthful female fighter pilot winning the hearts of spectators at an aerial show staged at the army’s Air Wing Battalion in Dar es Salaam.

Lieutenant Rose Katila of the Air Force Battalion, the only female fighter pilot in the armed forces – also a rare species in many other African countries – evoked sharp living memories of advanced forces in some parts of the world that boast of a few fighter pilots of her gender.

While the various military equipment on display fascinated the huge crowd, 30-year-old Lieutenant Katila electrified the people’s excitement after taking off the jet gracefully and cruising in the sky with pomp.

Commander-in-Chief President Kikwete was amongst the spectators and joined hundreds of his compatriots in rewarding Lieutenant Katila complimentary cheers as the heroine landed the jet back to base successfully. The presence of, and acknowledgement from her ultimate army boss, overwhelmed the army’s only female pilot with joy.

Anusurika kuchapwa viboko!

Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno.

Sitta, who dares wins!

THE Speaker to the Bunge, Sam Six (photo), is now basking in unimaginable popularity and adoration in the United Republic of Tanzania.

He was recently crucified for siding with the good guys. When the Speaker asked for more security around him last month, I though the guy was simply being over the top. Who would want to harm Sam Six? It sounded so unreal. How could anyone want to be so crude?

Well, events over the past week have shown that indeed, Sam Six is being threatened. The man is being hunted. Some people have not been exactly tickled silly by the way he has been running the show in the Bunge.

While most of us observers have been thinking that the Speaker has been doing his job tolerably well, some forces have been baying calling for his blood. They wanted a lynching.

They want him out. The country has been looking on in horror as Sam Six was being savaged by his own ‘pals’. You wonder if this was a secret agenda or clever plot, but the whole affair has made him an instant national hero.

Buoyed by a collective approval of millions of Tanzanians, Sam has come back swinging back. He said on Sunday that he would continue to wage war on grand corruption and other forms of criminality both within the party and government. “I’ll always make decisions which are good for the majority.

I firmly believe that God is with me, and will never relent,” he said during a meeting organised by religious leaders. Which is music to most Tanzanians. The thing is the country has been held at ransom for a long time now.

Most of the people have been chafing under this spectacle of the rule of money by a few corrupt businessmen masquerading as politicians. The majority in the country are simply being bullied by a monied few. This just can’t go on.

The late Mwalimu Nyerere said: “To bully someone is evil. But to agree to be bullied is an even worse crime.” Are Tanzanians agreeing to be bullied? Yes, but not forever. It is just that the situation is getting to be obscene. This is just not right! You cannot have a situation whereby some sell-out politicians blatantly come out in support of grand corruption.

The situation had to give in, sooner or later. Well it is giving in now. Supporters of grand corruption are training their guns at the wrong targets. It is not only Sam Six and the hero MPs in the Bunge who are the problem.

It is millions of Tanzanians who are just fed up. They have been watching this steady rape of their country and are now getting angry and frustrated. They are not members of any party.

Nigeria bank boss held

by police

A former Nigerian bank boss being sought by the country's anti-corruption police has turned herself in.

Cecilia Ibru, who the central bank sacked from her chief executive position at Oceanic Bank on 14 August, had been sought for three days.

She is now due to be questioned on suspicion of fraud, insider trading and money-laundering.

Ms Ibru and other bank bosses were sacked after the central bank had to come to the rescue of five lenders.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has to inject a total of 400bn naira ($2.6bn; £1.6bn) into the banks - Afribank, Intercontinental Bank, Finbank, Oceanic Bank and Union Bank - after all were found to have seriously low cash reserves because of a series of bad loans.

Fifteen other chief executives at the banks are already being questioned by police, following the expiry of a deadline for many of the loans in question to be repaid.

"She [Ms Ibru] gave herself up this afternoon. She is being interrogated," Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) spokesman Femi Babafemi said.

Shares in the five banks, which account for 40% of the country's bank credit, have been suspended.

They had run up bad loans totalling a collective 1.14 trillion naira.

Nigeria is no stranger to corruption, but the latest scandal has dominated the country's media headlines.

Foreigners grabbing prime

pieces of land in

INDIVIDUAL foreigners have been buying houses in prime locations and snapping up choice pieces of land in major towns and cities across Tanzania, despite national laws prohibiting the sale of land to non-Tanzanians, it has been revealed.

The illegal real estate acquisition spree by foreigners is said to be already pushing up the prices of houses and plots of land, due to a rising demand for prime property.

According to a survey by THISDAY, foreigners have been actively engaged in the purchase of land and other real estate property throughout the country.

It is illegal for individual foreigners to own land or buildings in the country.

The law says foreigners are allowed to own land in Tanzania only through joint venture companies formally registered with local (Tanzanian) shareholders, and after receiving a permit from the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC).

However, local real estate agents say this has not deterred a number of individual foreigners from European, Asian and even neighbouring countries from going on a buying spree.

The foreigners are said to have been particularly active in snapping up beach properties and other choice pieces of land in prime locations such as Oysterbay, Masaki, Msasani, Mikocheni, Upanga, city centre, Sinza, Kigamboni, Mbezi Beach and elsewhere in Dar es Salaam.

Prime properties in various other parts of the country, including Bagamoyo, Zanzibar, Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Mwanza, Morogoro, Mbeya, Mara, Kagera, Kigoma and elsewhere, are also being sold to individual foreigners.

The Land Act and the Village Land Act of 1999 together oversee issues of real estate acquisition in Tanzania.

Observers say legal loopholes are allowing individual foreigners to buy real estate properties in Tanzania at will.

The sale of real estate in Tanzania is done on a willing buyer and willing seller arrangement, with both sides to the sale agreement entering into a contract.

The law does not compel parties to a sale agreement involving real estate to prove their Tanzanian citizenship.

”I have helped so many foreigners buy houses and beach properties in Dar es Salaam. In fact, they call me on a daily basis making inquiries,” said a local real estate agent who identified himself as Samson.

”There is a Kenyan citizen that I know of who ’owns’ a ten-hectare farm in Bagamoyo. These foreigners are everywhere,” the agent added.

Contacted for comment, the Minister for Land, Housing and Urban Settlement Development, Capt. (rtd) John Chiligati, reiterated that it is illegal for individual foreigners to buy real estate in Tanzania.

This means that all real estate property sale agreements now being entered into between an individual foreigner and a Tanzanian citizen, are null and void in the eyes of the law.

Chiligati told THISDAY: The law does not allow individual foreigners to own land in Tanzania. However, foreign investors may get access to the nation’s land through the TIC.”

The minister said municipal councils across the country are required to ensure foreigners are not given ownership of land.

He warned that public officials found to be complicit in the illegal acquisition of land by individual foreigners will face stern measures.

On another dimension, land experts both in Tanzania and abroad have cautioned the government about an ongoing land grab in the country, involving multinational companies from Europe, Asia, Middle East and elsewhere which have been granted access to millions of acres of local land for growing food and bio-fuel crops.

Michael Jackson died from

Lethal Levels of Propofol

King of pop, Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson had lethal levels of Propofol in his system when he died, this according to a search warrant affidavit filed in Houston.

Dr. Conrad Murray told cops he had been treating Jackson for 6 weeks for insomnia -- giving him 50 milligrams of Propofol every night through an IV.

Murray told cops he feared Jackson was getting addicted so he reduced the dosage to 25 mg.

The morning Jackson died, Dr. Murray gave Jackson valium at 1:30 AM. Murray said the valium didn't work so he gave the singer an IV injection of lorazepam -- an anti-anxiety drug. Murray told cops Jackson was still awake, so he then gave him midazolam -- a sedative.

Murray gave Jackson more drugs. He says at 10:40 AM, he administered 25 mg of Propofol. Dr. Murray told cops Jackson repeatedly demanded the drug.

As we first reported, cops found 8 bottles of Propofol in Jackson's house after he died, but they do not know where it was purchased.

Cops also found Valium, Tamsulosin, Lorazepam, Temazepam, Clonazepam, Trazodone and Tizanidine, along with the Propofol.

The various drugs were prescribed by Dr. Murray, Dr. Arnold Klein and Dr. Allan Metzger.

Dr. Murray reportedly told cops 10 minutes after administering Propofol ... he "left Jackson's side to go to the restroom and relieve himself. Murray stated he was out of the room for about 2 minutes maximum. Upon his return, Murray noticed that Jackson was no longer breathing."

Dr. Murray says he began CPR and at some point ran downstairs and asked the chef to send up Prince Jackson, the eldest son, then Murray continued performing CPR.

Dr. Murray says he noticed that Jackson wasn't breathing at around 11 AM. He was then on the cell phone for 47 minutes with 3 separate calls, from 11:18 to 12:05. The 911 call came in at 12:21 PM .... a much longer delay than originally reported.

Dr. Murray told cops other docs had administered Propofol to Jackson, including Las Vegas Dr. David Adams. Dr. Murray said he was at a cosmetologist's office where Dr. Adams gave Jackson Propofol.

Interestingly, according to the warrant, Dr. Murray refused to sign the death certificate at the UCLA Medical Center.

UPDATE:
If Dr. Murray is charged with a crime, there's a statement in the affidavit that could be evidence of a consciousness of guilt. The document also states both "UCLA doctors and L.A. Fire Dept. paramedics stated that Dr. Murray had only disclosed that he had given the medication Lorazepam [Ativan] to Jackson prior to his medical emergency." Dr. Murray did not disclose that he had given Jackson Propofol.
