The killings in Tarime

KAMPALA, UGANDA—Given that I had been followed around the tiny town for two days by men in ’80s-style wraparound sunglasses, it wasn’t really a surprise to me when I finally got arrested last Thursday in northern Tanzania.
I had gone to the East African nation to investigate the deaths of five villagers gunned down at a mine in North Mara belonging to African Barrick, a subsidiary of Toronto-based mining giant Barrick Gold Corp. Barrick said the men killed by security forces — initial reports had pegged the death toll at seven — were “intruders.” Family members of the victims said the gold-laced stones the men routinely collected at the mine were their only means of survival….read more>>>>>

A mixed up florist

A local florist just went out of business, but it was his own fault.

He kept getting his orders mixed up. One woman received flowers sent by her husband, who was at a business meeting in Florida.

She was perplexed by the message on her card: "Our deepest sympathy."

But she was not nearly as surprised as the woman whose husband had just passed away. Her card read, "Hotter here than I expected. Too bad you didn't come too."

Stray cheetah captured in Abu Dhabi street - By Jenifer Fenton and Bryony Jones, for CNN

Cheetahs are native to Africa and parts of the Middle East, but are not thought to live in the wild in the United Arab Emirates.

(CNN) -- A young cheetah has been captured while wandering the streets of Abu Dhabi, an animal welfare activist said Sunday.

Raghad Auttabashi said the wild cat had been spotted behind a house in the Emirati capital's Al Karamah district on Sunday morning.

Police and wildlife experts were called to the scene, and the injured cheetah was later caught by a pest control worker.

Auttabashi, of the Al Rahma animal welfare organization, said no one had been hurt in the incident; "everyone was fine and safe."

The cheetah, which had suffered a broken left front paw, was taken to the Abu Dhabi Wildlife Center for medical treatment.

Cheetahs are native to Africa and parts of the Middle East, but are not thought to live in the wild in the United Arab Emirates.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, the cheetah is classed as 'vulnerable' -- there are thought to be just 7,500 of the creatures left in the wild.

Imagine a tiny boat afloat on a thrashing sea, water pouring through a gaping hole in the hull.
