Law is coming..
The government yesterday said it was in the process of drafting a new law that would allow Tanzanians to have dual citizenship.
Home Affairs deputy minister Khamis Kagasheki told the House that the Union and Zanzibar governments were jointly looking into the matter.
The deputy minister was responding to a question posed by Mwadini Jecha (Wete, CUF) who had wanted to know when the government would table a bill proposing the enacting of a new law on the matter.
``The Union government and that of Zanzibar are carefully looking into the matter. When the process has been completed, my ministry will bring the bill in the House for approval,`` said Kagasheki.
Earlier on, the deputy minister told Parliament that under the Union constitution, dual citizenship was illegal.
He said the law denied the people of Tanzania a chance to possess dual citizenship, and their Tanzanian citizenship ceased once they opted for other citizenship.
Kagasheki said the current laws particularly affected Tanzanian children born outside the country, who on reaching 18 years, were required to denounce the citizenship of one of their parents if they wanted to keep the Tanzanian citizenship.
``The system is not much known by our people. For that reason, at times, children encounter problems when they apply for passports or seek sponsorship for higher education,`` he said.
