Freak thunderstorm

causes havoc in Oslo

An unusually powerful thunderstorm struck Oslo Saturday afternoon, flooding streets, downing power lines and setting several fires. There are no reports of injuries from the storm.

Many homes in Oslo and Baerum lost electricity, as well as telephone and TV signals.

Many were stranded on outlying islands, where they had been enjoying a sunny summer afternoon at the beach.

All train traffic through Oslo Central Station stopped from 17:00 to 19:00 hrs, due to power failure, after a large tree fell over the line.

Things were back to normal Sunday morning.
