seekers drops

After a gradual increase over several months, 1.530 persons applied for asylum in September, against 1693 in August, a 9.6 per cent drop.

However, the number of asylum seekers is still twice as high as at the same time last year, says Frode Forfang, deputy director of the Immigration Directorate (UDI),

In his opinion it may be a little too early to tell if it is the stricter regulations only which have caused the reduction. It could also be seasonal variations, he says.

UDI has estimated that 19,000 persons will apply for asylum i Norway in 2009.
