Studying in Norway

for the first time?

Students that are going to study in Norway for the first time this fall should submit their application for a study permit no later than in May.

UDI aims to process all applications for first time study permits well before the beginning of the semester. To reach that goal it is important that we receive the applications early, with all the necessary documentation enclosed. It will take longer time to process application lacking documentation.

Last year UDI processed more than 6 000 applications for study permits. We cooperate closely with education providers, Norwegian embassies and consulates, and the police to facilitate the case processing.

Citizens of EU/EEA can read here for information on necessary documentation.

Citizens of countries outside EU/EEA can read here for information on necessary documentation.

Foreign students who are granted a residence permit in Norway are automatically granted a work permit. This permit is valid for part-time work for up to 20 hours per week as well as full-time during holidays.

Please note that the application for a renewal of the permit must be submitted at your local police station no later than one month before the permit expires. If the application is submitted in due time, you can still study and work part-time while the application is being processed.

When applying for a renewal it is important that the education provider gives you a statement of your study progress.
