Saa 02:56 EDT (Marekani) tarehe 21. Julai 1969, binadamu wa kwanza alikanyaga mwezini na alikuwa kamanda Neil Amstrong na alisema msemo maarufu:
"That´s small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind"
Amstrong alifuatiwa na binadamu wa pili kukanyaga mwezi, kamanda Edwin Eugene "Buzz" Aldrin; huku mwenzao, kamanda Michael Collins akivinjari angani na kuwasubiri Amstrong na Buzz Aldrin.
Apollo 11 ilirushwa angani saa 13:32 UTC (Marekani), tarehe 16. Julai 1969 kutokea Kennedy Space Center, Houston.
Misheni hii ilikuwa hitimisho la hotuba ya Rais John F. Kennedy, aliyoitoa kwenye mkusanyiko wa Bunge la Marekani; Congress tarehe 25. Mei 1961 aliposema:
"I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth:"
