Four Norwegian soldiers killed in Afghanistan

Four Norwegian soldiers were killed when their armoured vehicle was destroyed by a road bomb while on patrol at Almar in the Faryab Province in Northern Afghanistan on Sunday.
Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg says it was with deep sorrow he received the news that four Norwegian soldiers have been killed while serving in Afghanistan, and that he wants to express his deepfelt sympathy with the next of kin.
He says what has happened is tragic, and a reminder that there is always a risk involved in participating in military operations.
Defence Minister Grete Faremo says the loss has made a deep impression:
- Today Norway has been hard hit. The loss has made a deep impression on us all. We do all that is in our power to safeguard the soldiers, but we can issue no guarantee against such losses, Faremo says.
- We have lost four of our best men. We share deep sorrow. Our thoughts go to the next of kin and to fellow soldiers, says Defence Chief Harald Sunde at a press conference.
Defence Minister Faremo and the Defence Chief Sunde will leave for Afghanistan as soon as possible to accompany the biers home to Norway.
The soldiers who lost their lives were part of the stabilising force stationed at the Maymana base in Northern Afghanistan.
At present, Norway has around 600 troops deployed in Afghanistan
