Hundreds
Norwegian-Somali children are on long stays abroad in Somalia, Kenya and Egypt
and Britain because their parents are dissatisfied with the Norwegian
school.
The main
reason that children are sent out are the dissatisfaction with the Norwegian
school system and the concern that their children do not learn enough in
Norway, writes the newspaper Aftenposten.
- There is a
recurring theme among those we talked to. The Parents very often find out that
their children are perceived as weak learners, often because they speak
Norwegian worse than their peers. It worries parents that children are not
challenged enough in Norway, says Hilde Lidén at the Institute for Social Research.
She is an
author of the report "Transnational
adolescence," which will be presented this week. Here, the researchers
mapped the extent and causes of why immigrant children traveling on long stay
abroad.
