Standard contract of employment for au pair is still compulsory.
This is one of several points in the instruction from The Ministry of Labour and Social Inclusion (AID) concerning the au pair arrangement.
Based on the instruction from the ministry, The Directorate of Immigration (UDI) will work on a circular that will be available in the near future.
An information document concerning the rights and obligations of an au pair and the host family will be prepared. It will be required from now on that this document is signed by the au pair, the host family and eventually the procurement agency.
- The au pair system allows young people to increase their language ability and gain greater knowledge of Norway and Norwegian culture by living with a Norwegian family, says Karl Erik Sjøholt, Director of The Managed Migration Department.
In addition, the pocket money has been increased from NOK 3,000 per month to NOK 4,000 per month.
Furthermore there is no longer a requirement that the host family has Norwegian nationality. It is, however, required that the host family has good knowledge of the Norwegian society, and that in addition the Norwegian language is used in their daily activities. Based on this, there is a requirement that, if one or more of the host family members are of a foreign nationality or background, this should generally not be the same as that of the au pair.
The ministry further instructs the UDI to maintain the current requirement concerning the number of years the host family member(s) have resided in Norway. That is, there is still the requirement of a 10 year residence in Norway where the host family members are of the same nationality as the au pair.
