State meteorologists had warned that the first severe winter storm of the season was due to hit the southern part of the country over the weekend.
It arrived a bit early in the mountains of Telemark, closing the main E-134 highway over Haukelifjell. Highway 7 over the Hardanger Plateau also closed, along with highways 45 at Hunnedal, 50 from Hol to Aurland and 53 between Tyin and Årdal.
None of the roads was expected to reopen before the weekend, and more heavy snow was expected on Saturday.
All vehicular traffic over Highway 9 from Hovden to Haukeli, at the northern end of Setesdalen, was conducted in organized convoys. Traffic also went in convoys over Vikafjellet and Hemsedalfjellet.
The Oslo area was bracing for up to 15 centimeters of snow on Saturday, and the southern coast known as Sørlandet was also expected to be hit by heavy snows over the weekend.
