All applications with sufficient documentation attached will be processed before the start of the semester, said Director General of the UDI, Ida Børresen as she opened a conference for foreign students at the Norwegian School of Management in Oslo Thursday April 10.
Last year approximately 8 000 foreign students were granted a permit to study in Norway. This number has doubled since 2001.
In order to facilitate the case processing of applications for residence permits for students, the UDI is co-operating with many education providers. The education providers will ensure that the UDI will receive documentation of enrolment with first time applications, and a statement on the study progressions that recommends the granting of a part time work permit when applying for a renewal.
Easier for students to get work permit
Foreign students who are granted a residence permit in Norway are now automatically granted a work permit. This permit is valid for part-time work for up to 20 hours per week and full-time during holidays. The work permit has to be renewed with the residence permit. It is a condition that the education providers recommend that a part time work permit is granted.
Co-operation with education providers
For the fourth consecutive year the UDI initiates meetings with education providers prior to the intake of students to higher education. The co-operation will lead to a better understanding for the rules and regulations managed by the UDI, and quicker case processing. This year the UDI guarantees that cases that have been sufficiently informed will be processed by August 1.
Most of the students originate from Germany, China, Russia, France and Spain.
