Police in Lørenskog, just northeast of Oslo, were faced with a dramatic situation Wednesday after a man parked his car outside the local sheriff’s office, claimed it was full of explosives and threatened to blow the building to bits.

All buildings within 300 meters of the parked car were evacuated, including parts of the Metro shopping center and a local ICA grocery store.

Police back-up was called in, including a bomb squad from Oslo. Police negotiators engaged the man in conversation until he finally was arrested around 2pm.

Police confirmed later that there was a bomb in the car, and that it could have done "considerable damage."

The man's motive was unclear and police wouldn't comment. The man, in his 30s, is from the Lørenskog area and reportedly had a police record.
