APA-Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Albinos in Tanzania have said they would seek refuge in other countries if the Tanzania government fails to control that ritual killings that have frequently been targeted against their community nationwide, APA learnt here Thursday.

Addressing a press conference in Dar es Salaam on Thursday, the chairman of the Albinos Association of Tanzania, Ernest Kimaya, said 26 albinos have so far reportedly been killed, most of them women and children. And yet no suspect has been jailed as a result of the ritual killings, he added.

"We might be forced to seek refuge in a safe country if the government is not able to stop the killings of albinos in the country," Kimaya said.

He added that since the government has not been willing to use its security to control the albino killings, the light-skinned community would stage demonstrations to bring awareness to that the authorities to deal with the problem as a matter of urgency.

According to him, albinos were living in fear, with some remaining indoors for fear of being attacked and killed. "It is only a few of us who have the courage to walk in the streets. But most of our colleagues stay indoors, while those who do venture out do so in fear," he said.

The 19 October protest will be received by President Jakaya Kikwete in Dar es Salaam after completing its march.
