TOP surgeons have ruled out the possibility of performing separation surgery on 11-year-old conjoined female twins living in Ikonda Village, Makete District, Iringa Region on grounds that the operation would be too risky since the girls share one intestine.

The twins - Consolata and Maria - were born on November 19, 1997 at Consolata Hospital owned by the Roman Catholic Church in Ikonda. They are currently Standard Five pupils at Ikonda Primary School.
An Italian nun working at the hospital, Sister Egle Casiraghi, told THISDAY here on Monday that the twins have been examined by specialist surgeons from Germany, Italy and Spain.
