Nations sign cluster bomb
treaty in
Representatives of more than 100 countries are on Wednesday assembled in Norway's capital Oslo, where they will sign a treaty to ban the use of cluster bombs, a ban which the Norwegian Government took the initiative to.
At that time Norway's Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said:
“This is a historic moment. This is a victory for international humanitarian law. We have negotiated a strong and comprehensive text. The ban will cover cluster munitions that have unacceptable humanitarian consequences, which in practice means that all cluster munitions that have been used in war to date will now be prohibited. This means, for example, that Norway will have to destroy its stockpiles of cluster munitions,” said Mr Stoere.
However, some of the world's main producers and stockpilers of cluster munition - including the US, Russia and China - do not support the treaty.
The Norwegian Government took the initiative to a ban on cluster munitions around two years ago.
