The recognized Norwegian philosopher, author, environmentalist and mountain climber Arne Naess sr has died at the age of nearly 97. He died in his sleep on Monday night, VG reports.
Arne Naess Sr. was born on January 27th 1912, and received his MA degree in 1933, as the youngest ever. Doctor of Philosophy in 1936.
He became full professor at the University of Oslo at the age of 27 as the youngest.
He has written a number of books on philosophy, many of them still used in Norway.
Naess was an advocate of Mahatma Gandhi's pilosophy of non violence which he developed further.
Arne Naess sr led the expedition that made the first ascent of Tirich Mir in Pakistan (7706 m) in 1950 and another in 1964.
Naess was knighted by King Harald in 2005, for his useful work for society and was made Commander with Star of the Royal Norwegian order of St.Olav First Class.
