Burger Off' Facebook

Ad Dropped

Burger King has pulled an internet campaign that gave Facebook users a free Whopper for every 10 friends they dumped.

The fast food chain removed the software application - which saw more than 230,000 friends "sacrificed" for burgers - after pressure from the social networking site.

The Whopper Sacrifice Campaign - which could be installed free by Facebook users - sent a message to deleted friends saying why they had been dropped.

"While Facebook was a great sport, they did ask for changes that would have resulted in a different approach to our application," a Burger King spokesperson said.

"Ultimately, based on philosophical differences, we decided to conclude the campaign."

Facebook was reportedly unhappy about the message saying their pal preferred a Whopper to them.

"We encourage creativity from developers and companies using Facebook Platform, but we also must ensure that applications meet users' expectations," said Facebook.

"After constructive conversations with Burger King and the developer of the application, they have decided to conclude their campaign rather than continue with the restrictions we placed on their application."

Meanwhile, the Whopper campaign website continues to offer an "Angry-gram" service allowing people to send animated burgers to "let someone know they annoy the hell outta you."

Angry-grams are meant as jokes and not to be used for harassment, the company pointed out.
