Great need for more

Teachers in Norway

The government has not been able to fulfil its promise of more teachers in the primary schools, NRK reports. Latest figures show that the number of teachers employed is about the same as before the coalition came to power.

Head of the Teachers' Union (Utdanningsforbundet) Helga Hjetland is disappointed:

- Few teachers in the classrooms creates poorer teaching conditions for the students, and we do not get the good schools we all wish to create, Hjetland says.

In its political program the coalition goernment stated that more teachers would be hired to provide better follow-up for the students.

It is estimated that 10,000 teachers are needed in the Norwegian primary schools, according to NRK.
