Drogba "sorry"

for abuse of

Norwegian referee

Chelsea's striker Didier Drogba has apologised for verbally abusing the Norwegian referee Tom Henning Øvrebø following his club's Champions League exit on Wednesday evening. Øvrebø also received threats on his life.

The Ivorian and several team-mates surrounded Øvrebø after Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Barcelona at Stamford Bridge.

The BBC quoted Drogba as saying: "In the heat of the moment I let out my huge frustration and disappointment. For that, I apologise,"

European governing body Uefa is set to to confirm on Friday whether Drogba will be punished for his behaviour.

In a statement issued by the club, Drogba, 31, admitted he had overreacted.

"I was very upset at what happened during the game," he said.

"I also fully accept that the language I used did not set a good example for those watching at home, especially children," Drogba was quoted a saying.

The Norwegian referee also received threats on his life over the internet, and upon returning to Norway his home was guarded by the police, and he was adviced to stay at an unknown address for the time being.
