Unemployment continues to rise

Fresh figures from the National Labour Office (NAV) shows that 68,300 persons are now without work in Norway. This is an 85 per cent increase compared with the same period last year, and means that 2.6 per cent of the total labour force is now without work.

Professor at Norges Handelshoyskole Rolf Jens Brunstad says the unemployment rate for May is surprisingly low, compared with the development in other (European) nations. However, he believes the unemployment figures will continue to rise during the rest of 2009 and into 2010.

The increase in unemployment is highest in the counties of Vest-Agder and Vestfold.

Unemployment is highest in Finnmark and Oslo with 3.8 and 3.4 per cent respectively.

It is lowest in Rogaland (1.8 per cent) and Sogn og Fjordane (1.9 per cent).
