Norwegian Foreign Minister

visits Iraq

Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere is Monday on a visit to Iraq, where he will have talks with Foreign Minister Hosiyar Zebari and the Minister for Human Rights Wijdan Michel Salim. Norway will open an embassy office in Baghdad, accredited to the Norwegian embassy in Amman.

The Norwegiaan Foreign Minister will also have talks with non-government organisations as well as the UN representative in Iraq.

- I have for some time wanted to visit Iraq, and I am pleased that it has finally been made possible, Stoere says.

- Norway and Iraq have lately developed closer contacts, and I will now inform the Iraqi Foreign Minister that Norway will open a diplomatic presence in Baghdad, Stoere says.

- I also wish to be informed about the democratic, social and economic development in Iraq, where progress has been made, but where also much still remains to be done. In order to get the total picture I will therefore meet with representatives from the civilian society, the International Red Cross as well as the Iraqi authorities, the Norwegian Foreign Minister says.
