US authorities have promised to stop the surveillance in Norway until the Norwegian authorities have determined whether or not the monitoring on Norwegian soil is illegal, according to VG.Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (photo) is not satisfied with the reply from the US regarding their claim that Norwegian authorities had given them permission to carry out the surveillance of Norwegian citizens in Norway.
- They used the rather loose wording that they had been in contact with Norwegian authorities. We must find out what this really means, Støre says.
Justice Minister Knut Storberget has promised to give a full report to Parliament (Stortinget), but says to NRK that it may easily take a few weeks before he is able to inform about who knew what in the controversial surveillance case.
He says both the Secret Police (PST) and the Police Directorate will have to go back in time and check on a large amount of information, in order to chart these facts.
PST chief Roger Berg says the PST knew that the US carried out security sureillance around its Embassy in Oslo, but says that the US had not obtained permission to carry out surveillance to the extent revealed by the TV2 reports this week.
However, spokesman for the US Department of Foreign Affairs, Philip Crowley, says that as far as he knows, the Norwegian authorities were informed.
- All that we do is done is accordance with the security agreements we have with our host nations, everywhere in the world, - including Norway.
