Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre held the opening speech, and the Red Cross Malaria Advocacy Report 2011 was presented to the conference by Sven Mollekleiv, president of the Norwegian Red Cross.
- Every 45 seconds a child dies of malaria. But malaria is a preventable and treatable disease and recent progress shows that malaria's days may be numbered — but we need your contribution, Mollekleiv said..
He said that 2011 marks a vital opportunity to review the progress made so far in the fight against malaria and define next steps to reach the relevant Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.
- We hope that this conference will contribute to strengthen the ongoing dynamic partnerships  that has reduced malaria morbidity and mortality in several countries, Mollekleiv says.
