Jeshi la Kujenga Taifa (JKT) now gets ready to absorb Form 6 leavers

OFFICERS from the National Youth Service (JKT) will on Wednesday start visiting 24 secondary schools whose 5,000 form six students are expected to join JKT camps in March, this year.

According to a statement issued by JKT’s Major General Raphael Muhuga recently, the officers will visit the schools to provide training modalities. The 24 secondary schools listed are Kibondo, Musoma, Kibaha, Ilboru, Bagamoyo, Jitegemee, Tabora Boys, Nganza, Mtwara Girls, Ihungo, Kilakala and Benjamini Mkapa.

Others are Maswa Girls, Dodoma, Tumaini – Singida, Galanos, Ashira, Nangwa –Manyara, Iyunga, Mpanda, Lindi, Iringa Girls, Kawawa – Iringa and Ruhuwiko –Songea. “Under the JKT Law of 1964 and reviewed in 2002, section 5 (2b), JKT Major General is mandated to call up the first batch of 5,000 students who will complete their studies in 2013, ready to join JKT on March 2, this year,” reads the statement in part.

The programme to have form six students join the national youth service was halted in 1994. Presenting the Ministry of Defence and National Service’s budget estimates last year, Minister Shamsi Vuai Nahodha said JKT camps have a capacity to receive 20, 000 youths, however, due to budget constraints they will start with 5,000 youths only.

He explained that 41,348 form six youths are expected to complete their studies in 2013, adding that preparations were underway to accommodate the 5,000 batch. According to the information gathered from some JKT publications, the training will last for six months.

The training will be held in Mlale, Ruvuma Region, Mafinga in Iringa Region and Masange, Tabora Region. Others are Oljoro (Arusha), Bulombora (Kigoma) and Kanembwa camp also in Kigoma Region.
