FLAVIANA Matata, Tanzania's flamboyant representative in the Miss Universe beauty contest, is riding high in the pageant's starting grid, and may do wonders in the country's maiden appearance at the event in Mexico City. According to a website tracking the contest, globalbeauties.com, the 19-year-old Flaviana yesterday held the pole or first position in the 77-beauties race, ahead of aspirants from Venezuela, Spain and Greece, heading the top 20 list. Another status update on the beauties is due today. The postings are based on a worldwide vote by viewers following the pageant. The grid shows that the contestant from Greece was in the fourth position, followed by Serbia, Japan, USA, Korea, Mexico, Russia and South Africa. Other contestants in that order were Thailand, Estonia, Paraguay, Bolivia, Colombia, Slovenia, Brazil, India and Peru who tied with Angola at the 20th position. Czech Republic and Poland also tied in the 22nd position. After performing well in the Miss Photogenic event in which she finished 4th runner-up, the 5.9-foot girl is tipped to grab any of the top three slots in the finals to be held in Mexico City on May 28. Judges would include NBC's "Heroes" James Kyson Lee, NBC's "Deal or No Deal" briefcase model Lindsay Clubine, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, rocker Dave Navarro, World and Olympic figure skating champion Michelle Kwan. Others are celebrity hairstylist Ken Paves, fashion designer Marc Bouwer, "Project Runway" judge and Elle magazine fashion director Nina Garcia, and former Miss Universe (1993) Dayanara Torres. Each contestant will be judged in three categories, swimsuit, evening gown and personality interview.
