18,000 illegal

immigrants in Norway

The estimated total number of unauthorized residents with non-EU origins living in Norway is estimated to be around 18,000, according to Statistics Norway (SSB).(Photo :Secretary of State in the Labour Department, Libe Rieber-Mohn)

However, the exact number is uncertain, SSB researcher Li Chun Zhang says in a report.

He says the number may range from 10,500 to 32,000.

Secretary of State in the Labour Department, Libe Rieber-Mohn, underlines that the number of illegal immigrants staying in Norway is much smaller than in many other countries.

However she says she will study the report thoroughly, in order to determine which welfare benefits ought to be available to illegal immigrants.

In particular she is concerned about children of illegal immigrants.

All children living in Norway have the same rights, but it appears that many parents are afraid to claim these rights on behalf of their children, for fear that they may end up being deported.
