Internet banking breaks down

The online banking sites for some of Norway's largest financial institutions were decidedly off-line on Tuesday. Hundreds of thousands of customers were affected.

This is what DnB NOR's "nettbank" site looked like late Tuesday morning.

"We apologize..." was the message sent out by the country's largest bank, DnB NOR, when its online banking site crashed.

The so-called "nettbank" sites for most of the banks in the Sparebanken group, Fokus Bank and Skandiabanken were also down.

The system failure was blamed on a hardware problem in the systems of EDB Fellesdata in Oslo, which serves the online banking sites.

"We have some challenges tied to the nettbank," Geir Remman of EDB Fellesdata told Aftenposten.no. "We're working to exchange the machines that aren't operating."

The problems first emerged on Monday, and got worse during the night. The cause was unclear.

"We just have to concentrate on getting the system up again, and find out the reasons later," said Remman. "But we're sorry, of course, that this has happened."
