Female pilot clouds army`s
45th birthday
The Tanzania Peoples’ Defence Forces (TPDF) yesterday marked its 45th birthday since it was established from the mutinous Tanganyika Rifles in Dar es Salaam, with a youthful female fighter pilot winning the hearts of spectators at an aerial show staged at the army’s Air Wing Battalion in Dar es Salaam.
Lieutenant Rose Katila of the Air Force Battalion, the only female fighter pilot in the armed forces – also a rare species in many other African countries – evoked sharp living memories of advanced forces in some parts of the world that boast of a few fighter pilots of her gender.
While the various military equipment on display fascinated the huge crowd, 30-year-old Lieutenant Katila electrified the people’s excitement after taking off the jet gracefully and cruising in the sky with pomp.
Commander-in-Chief President Kikwete was amongst the spectators and joined hundreds of his compatriots in rewarding Lieutenant Katila complimentary cheers as the heroine landed the jet back to base successfully. The presence of, and acknowledgement from her ultimate army boss, overwhelmed the army’s only female pilot with joy.
