From Tuesday, 01.07.2014, it will be cheaper to use your mobile phone when you are traveling, at least if the trip goes to an EEA country. Data costs will be cut the most.

The cut that is introduced on July 1, is just the latest in a series of EU requirements, which since 2007 has worked to make it cost less for those who use the phone in another country than their home country.

Both the calls and text messages are cheaper and data cost, which has caused many a tourist  an  negative economic experience when the journey is over - is halved. Since 2007, the cost of so-called data roaming, mobile data abroad, have been cut by 80 percent through a series of decisions from the EU.

- This sharp cut in roaming charges will make a big difference for us this summer, said Neelie Kroes, who is the EU telecom commissioner.

The new price ceiling will have immediate effect also for the EEA countries, so if you're reading this on your mobile phone abroad it can be one of those benefits from the change of the rule . From Tuesday, the price of one megabyte of mobile data will be max 20 cents (NOK 1.67 with effect from today) if you are in another EEA country.

Kroes hopes that the roaming costs can be completely removed in the EU by the end of the year, but first the member has states agree on a proposal for a review of the telecommunications market.
