INVITATION FOR APPLICATIONS FOR NETWORKING AND RESEARCH FUNDS IN THE TANZANIA – UK SCIENCE SCHEME GRANTS

The Tanzania Academy of Sciences (TAAS) is no-for profit organization registered in accordance with the Non – Governmental Organizations Act, 2002 with Registration No. 00NGO/0796 on 13th April, 2005. The Academy was established on Tuesday, 24th February 2004.

The functions of the academy include:

1. To promote new knowledge creation and/or innovation;
2. Support high quality scientific research and its applications by availing competitive research grants and promotion of research projects;
3. Promote dissemination and exchange of scientific knowledge through learned journals, meetings, conferences, seminars and lectures;
4. Promoting public awareness of science through meetings, media and public lectures;
5. Promoting science education through the national science education policy and standards, quality of science curriculum and science teachers;
6. Interfacing with industries and other production sectors through involvement of scientists in industrial research as well as joint working groups (dedicated teams), with research units in production sectors;
7. Facilitate linkages with scientific communities abroad through exchange programmes and fellowships for training and research;

The Tanzania Academy of Sciences in collaboration with the Royal Society has established a Science Networking Grant and a Project Grant Scheme enabling Tanzanian and United Kingdom scientists to initiate collaborations and conduct sustainable research and development. The Science Networking Scheme provides grants up to ₤ 10,000, whereas the Project Grant Scheme, designed as a three-year, renewable collaborative award is up to ₤50,000 per annum.

The Networking Grant offers the opportunity for scientists in Tanzania and UK to establish links and support delegations to visit university departments and national research centers in Tanzania and UK .

The Project Grant provides support for mobility, research expenses, and moderate amounts for equipment. Apart from defined research projects, the application may include training elements, practical workshops, and seminars addressing specific skill gaps of scientists in Tanzania , directly involved in the research project.

The eligible fields include: Agriculture, Biodiversity (including medicinal plants and green chemistry), Water and Sanitation, Basic Human Health Research (including medicinal chemistry), Biotechnology, and Energy (including Biofuel).

Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must demonstrate excellence in their field; must be from academia and not industry or private or commercial organizations; they must be in early or mid career stage; and must have already identified a host who would be willing to participate in this scheme. It is the responsibility of the applicant and host to choose the independent referees.

CLOSING DATE AND RESULT DATE

Closing Date: 31 OCTOBER, 2007. Results are normally available after two months.
