POLICE in Kilimanjaro have shot dead fourteen suspected bandits, including a woman, eleven of whom have been identified as Kenyans. They also impounded several firearms, the Regional Police Commander (RPC), Mr Lucas Ng'hoboko told a press conference here yesterday.
He said following a tip-off from law-abiding citizens that the bandits planned to raid Exim Bank along Boma Road in Moshi, the law-enforcers decided to lie in waiting along a road leading to the bandits' hide-out at Two Bridges area in Weruweru, Hai district.
Mr Ng'hoboko explained that at around 7.30 pm on Wednesday night, three vehicles were spotted heading to the area where the bandits were lodged and police blocked the road using an unmarked police minibus.
When the bandits realised that cops were on their trail, they opened fire sparking a fierce gun-battle that resulted into the death of the fourteen bandits. Luckily, there were no casualties on the cops’ side but the minibus was badly damaged by bullets.
Police managed to impound one of the bandits' vehicles, a Suzuki Vitara, but two other vehicles disappeared in the dark and police have launched a big manhunt.
Mr Ng’hoboko told the 'Daily News' the escaped gunmen may have crossed the border since the whole saga happened at night but they could also still be holed up in the country, probably hidden by local accomplices. He called on law abiding citizens to report any suspicious characters.
He named the eleven bandits, who were identified through the identity cards and temporary permits issued in Nairobi on September 3, as Simon Maina Ndambaki (43), Moses Kuria Kamau (48), David Mbugua (53), Peter Maina Waweru (22), and William Muiruri Kamau (36).
Others were Philip Irungu Wanjiru (34), Rudofick Griceru Kariuki (28), John Gikonyo Buku (47), Zachary Mwangi Kamathiro (34), Jeremiah Macharia and a woman, Hannah Nyakanyi.
Three of the corpses have not been identified both by names and their nationalities. Police also seized three AK 47 assault rifles with 152 rounds of ammunition, three pistols with 55 rounds of ammunition, five bullet proof jackets, some Sudanese cash, one US dollar, 360 Kenyan shillings and 50 euros.

Eight Kenyans are currently standing trial for robbing at gun point Sh 5.5m/- from the NBC Moshi Branch in May 2004. There was widespread speculation here that the men also intended to stage a mission to ‘free’ their fellow ‘gangsters’ from lawful custody.
In the same year, Kenyan gunmen also raided two money changing shops in Moshi and made away with several million shillings. Police also are still holding two Kenyans who raided the Mwanga NMB branch, killed the guard and made away also with several millions. It would appear, gunmen from neighbouring Kenya had turned Moshi in particular, into their harvest field for ill gotten money.
