Kikwete launches CNN campaign to promote tourism in Tanzania

THISDAY REPORTER
Dar es Salaam.

PRESIDENT Jakaya Kikwete has announced the launch of the first-ever television tourism campaign in the American market titled ’Tanzania: Land of Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar and the Serengeti.’

The TV campaign is being aired on CNN, CNN Headline News, CNN Airport as well as CNN.COM.

The VIP reception for Tanzania’s travel industry partners took place on Thursday last week at ’Tavern on the Green’, in New York.

The launch of the campaign was timed to coincide with President Kikwete’s visit to New York to speak at the UN General Assembly, and to accept the African National Achievement Award on behalf of the people of Tanzania at a gala organized by the Africa-American Institute.

The dinner took place on September 19 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in New York. Amongst senior Tanzanian government officials present were the country’s ambassador to the United States, Ombeni Sefue; Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dr Augustine Mahiga; and the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Prof. Jumanne Maghembe.

Also present were the ministry’s permanent secretary Ms Blandina Nyoni; Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) managing director Peter Mwenguo; Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) director-general Gerald Bigurube; the chief conservator with Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA), Bernard Murunya; and the assistant director of tourism, Ms Mary Mmari.

Observers say Tanzania’s tourism industry is experiencing a booming growth and currently America is the number two source market of visitors to the country.

According to Prof. Maghembe, one of the TV campaign’s objectives is to boost American travel to Tanzania so it becomes the number one source of visitors to Tanzania worldwide.

’’We are confident that our media campaign, together with a simultaneous Tanzania Travel Agent Specialist Programme offered by Travel Agent University, will enable us to reach this goal by 2008,’’ said the minister.

In addition to tour operators selling Tanzania, other industry stakeholders at the reception were representatives of various airlines, hoteliers, and professional travel organizations including Africa Travel Association (ATA), American Tourism Society (ATS), United States Tour Operators Association (USTOA) and American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA).

hellow guys,
i must say what u r doing 4 the country (TANZANIA) should b recognize and appreciated, but then agian people should not be lead wrongly coz its not everything said and publicized by the government officials will benefit the tanzanians. Someone like Magembe should not be trusted with any thing to do with the country's welfare...... need i say more?, its known
so all that im saying Tanzanians in and out of the country should have a skeptical mind in evry action taken by the officials. It wont change a thing?, may be but it will make the difference in the long run
mtanzania anayeipenda nchi yake

There is also this sad fact. Of all tourism money that flows into the whole continent of Africa, only 2% of it stay in Africa. Now you and me know that all of those lodges and hotels in Tanzania are NOT OWNED BY TANZANIANS. So, Kikwte; why fight to get bread crumbs when you can have the whole bread? A well intended effort but falls way short of the target!

I concur with the above contributors.... It is also pathetic that the president of the country should stoop to do his "general's" work... Akina Maghembe and company should be ashamed because all this shows is:- 1. that nothing can be done without the president's intervention or hand??? I am sure there are better/URgent matters he should be handling

2. Nonetheless, we all know that the TZ tourism economy is in the hands of foreigners and the only Watanzania "allowed" are the Asian TZs or Wahindi.... like someone said tunaambulia makombo...
mpaka lini?

3. Tzs participation in the last tourism event in NY was pathetic...to say the least... We had Kenyans in our booth... a mzungu company (forgot the name) is our representative internationaly....Jamani!!! does this mean that among the 40+ million waTZ there are no educated, able and talented wazalendo to do our own promotions....

in response to the last point ... we all know that if you meet the above criteria/qualified or are capable you will be "Chifupad" as usual....
MASIKINI >>>> Tanzania kichwa cha mwendawazimu kweli.

The so called "leaders of the country" should start worrying/be concerned about the legacy we are leaving our children the future generation Tanzanians....

THAT IS WHAT WE CALL GREAT WORK!!!
GOOD EFFORT MUST BE PRAISED. BRAVO!

GOVERNMENT IS TRYING AND IS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. WE HAVE TO MARKET OUR COUNTRY NOT FOR SAKE OF TOURISM BUT FOR THE SAKE OF TANZANIA AS A COUNTRY WHICH DESERVE TO BE KNOWN. OTHER COUNTRIES ARE DOING IT. IT IS GOOD FOR THE ECONOMY AND PEOPLE'S COINFIDENCE. LETS GIVE OUR
SUPPORT AND OUR EFFORT.
REMEMBER,
IT CAN BE DONE PLAY YOUR PART!

LETS BELIEVE THAT WE CAN DO IT.
AND WE WILL DO IT

jamani! we should't be pessimistics always. at its a good start. and mind you: we have a good number of tourist hotels and other joints owned by wazawa!! in the modern times publicity is essential in trade.

Publicize the country yes..but can you cure cancer with a bandaid? It is like building roads with red soil in Tanzania only to be washed away when the rains come. What is done is good so that we can get our meager 2% from watalii but 98% is taken back to Europe. Also of all issues affecting the wazawa - is this a priority? And yes...why should the prez do this...is it his admission that may be the people he has are not qualified for the gig? I am not sure why Amani is praising the government?

Jamani kweli Tanzania sasa kuna utalii gani? Kama nchi inapata 2% na 98% inaishia europe. Hii ni exploitation tu. Aache kujitangazia ujinga wake bure. Aseme mambo ya maana wazawa wanakufa na malaria karne ya 21 hii. It is so sad, doesn't he have a ministry for that matter to do their job?
Kweli ndio maana white people wanaapa kwamba watu weusi wana akili ndogo kama za watoto wadogo.

LETS NOT MISS THE POINT HERE. TO MARKET A COUNTRY FOR A WHAT EVER REASON IS A GOOD THING,THATS WHY I SAY BRAVO TO THE GOVERMENT. OUTSIDE WORLD MUST KNOW THAT WE ARE THERE IN ORDER FOR THE TRADE TO BOOM. INVESTORS, BUSINESS MEN AND EXPERTS LIKE TO DO THEIR ACTIVITIES IN THE COUNTRIES WHICH THEY KNOW ABOUT.
AFRICA IN GENERAL IS FACING A VERY BAD PUBLICITY FROM THE WESTERN MEDIA, ALL WHAT U CAN SEE IN THE TV IS AIDS, HUNGER, DROUGHT, WAR, POVERTY, ETC - NEGATIVE, NEGATIVE NEGATIVE...

YES, IT'S A TIME TO CHANGE THAT FROM ALL ANGLES: MEDIA, TRADE, HEALTH, ... ABOVE ALL AFRICAN CONFIDENCE AND BELIEF.
WE HAVE TO BELIEVE IN OURSELVES AND OUR LEADERS AND GIVE THEM OUR ALL SUPPORT, SO THAT WHEN THEY DO SOMETHING THEY KNOW WE ARE THERE.

WILL THEY NOT GOING TO MESS UP SOMETIMES? DEFINATELY THEY WILL!! WHO WILL NOT???

LETS BE ONE AND GIVE OUR SUPPORT.

WHY 2%? BECAUSE IS BETTER THAN 0%.

WHY PREZ? CAUSE HE IS OUR LEADER & SERVANT NUMBER ONE!

Amani,
We have your point. A misdirected point however. You are telling Kikwete to settle for a 2%? It is like saying I can only take a small fish at home beacuse I have a small frying pan...and so my abilities cannot go beyond 2% We are all cheering for our country but Kikwete does not have to be a jack of all trades. It has been over 40 years after independence and yet almost half of our national budget comes from abroad? Yes man, cheer but the cheers have to also inject some constructive feedback...This is a democracy. We cheered for a long time..remember "TANU YAJENGA NCHI"? Where are we now?

WE NEED TO DO MORE AND BETTER; WE HAVE CORRECT OUR MISTAKES AND WE HAVE TO IT FAST; NO ONE CAN DENY THAT.
BUT WE ARE COMING FROM THE TIME WHEN WE COULD NOT AFFORD ALOT OF THINGS, THE ECONOMY AT ONE TIME WAS AT STAND STILL, REMEMBER!!!

SO LETS CONTRIBUTE OUR IDEAS AND EFFORTS INSTEAD OF CRITICISING EVERYTHING OUR LEADERS ARE DOING. IF THEY HAVE MANAGED 2% AND WE THINK IS NOT ENOUGH, LETS GIVE OUR ADVISES ON WHAT IS TO BE DONE TO GET 100%.
I DO BELIEVE MORE HAVE TO BE DONE TO PUSH OUR COUNTRY FURTHER. BUT WE CAN DO IT ONLY IF WE ARE POSITIVE, CONSTRUCTIVE, CREATIVE, CONFIDENT, AND PRO-ACTIVE. ABOVE ALL UNITED.
LOOK AT CHINA...DO I HAVE TO SAY MORE?
