the King omitted several paragraphs of the Government's policy.....

03.10.2007, 08:08

Untraditional opening of Parliament.

The traditional opening of the Norwegian Parliament (Storting) by King Harald took place on Tuesday, 2nd October 2007, when the King read the speech from the throne. However, this year with a difference.

As it turned out, the King omitted several paragraphs of the Government's policy statement for the coming year.

He did not mention what the Government hoped to accomplish with the income from oil and gas, and the Pension Fund (formerly National Oil Fund). Neither did he mention hopes for moderate wage agreements and a low unemployment rate, and a paper on labour import.

It turned out that the King at a point had turned two pages of his manuscript instead of one.

However, we may all relax, since the speech from the throne is a written and signed document, with a copy to the Speaker, the basis for Parliament's debate of the speech on Thursday will still be the entire speech.
