SAS convicted of industrial espionage

An appeals court in Oslo has convicted airline SAS' Norwegian operations of industrial espionage.

The appeals court (Borgarting lagmannsrett) ordered SAS Norge to pay a fine of NOK 4 million (about USD 720,000) for conducting industrial espionage against rival airline Norwegian Air.

The court ruled that SAS had obtained and used proprietary information from Norwegian through the reservations system Amadeus, from December 2001 until December 2005.

The case against SAS Norge had been filed by state prosecutors, who sought a fine of NOK 8 million. A lower court had acquitted SAS Norge.

A spokeswoman for SAS Norge said the airline was "disappointed and surprised" by the appeals court ruling, and that an appeal to Norway's highest court couldn't be ruled out.
