Record number of

foreigners with work

permits in Norway

Still attractive to work in Norway. Large increase in family reunification so far this year.

85 906 foreign workers held valid permits in Norway in March. This is 25 000 more than March last year. Never before has so many permits been registered.

- A record number of foreign citizens are working in Norway. When we register nearly 86 000 valid permits it is obviously still attractive to work in Norway. But there are indications that this number is a peak as increase of foreign workers has slowed down in March. It will be interesting to see if this will be the case in April as well, says Acting Head of Department of Managed Immigration, Christine Wilberg Poulsson.

Still Polish citizens make out the largest group. By the end of March, 10 500 Polish citizens held valid work permits.

This leads to more Polish citizens bringing their families to Norway. In the first three months of the year, the UDI has granted 1 015 permits based on family reunification to Polish citizens, nearly twice the number of the first three months in 2007.

In total, 4 800 permits based on family reunification were granted so far this year. That is a 25 per cent increase compared to same period last year.
