critical of tighter

asylum policy

The Children's Ombudsman, Reidar Hjermann says the Government's new, tighter asylum policy does not give enough consideration to children.

He questions whether the new policy is in the child's highest interest, as required by the UN Children's Convention.

- The way it reads, it looks as if children arriving without their parents may be given a sort of temporary residence permit, and expel them as soon as they come of age. This is rather unfortunate, Hjermann says.

- This contributes to a feeling of insecurity for the children, he says.
