More asylum seekers
to Norway
In the first six months of 2008, 5 400 people applied for asylum compared to 2 450 in the same period last year. 41 per cent of the asylum seekers who had their cases processed in the first six months of 2008 were granted a residence permit. 1 763 asylum seekers had their applications rejected in the first six months.
After a few years with an even number of asylum seekers, the number increased towards the end of 2007 and continued into 2008. So far this year, the number of asylum seekers has increased 120 per cent.
- War and conflict areas still produce most of the asylum seekers to Norway. Asylum seekers who are in real need of protection will be granted protection after an individual assessment of the applications, says the Director General of the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI), Ida Børresen.

Asylum seekers from these countries make up about 60 per cent of asylum seekers in 2008. After a decline in application from Somali nationals in 2007, there is a new increase in 2008. So far this year, applications from the group have increased by 385 per cent.
