Norwegian officer killed 

in Afghanistan


A Norwegian intelligence officer serving with the Norwegian military contingent in Afghanistan was killed when the vehicle in which he was travelling with another officer and two enlisted men was hit by a road bomb Friday morning.

Two vehicles were travelling on the road west of Mazar-e Sharif in Meymaneh, when the bomb went off. The first vehicle, which was unarmoured, was hit.

One officer was seriously wounded, and taken to the field hospital in Mazar-e Sharif, where he died from his wounds a few hours later. The three others escaped unharmed. The next of kin have been informed.

Around 600 Norwegian soldiers are deployed in Afghanistan. The intelligence unit is collecting information aboout troop movements and the development in the region.

- It is with deep sorrow I have received the tragic news, says Lieutenant General Harald Sunde, Chief of the Joint Operations Headquarter.
