PRIME Minister Mizingo Pinda of Tanzania

gets government support

PRIME Minister Mizingo Pinda has said that the government will continue to promote Swahili language as the country's first language.

Answering a question by Rev Gertrude Rwakatare (Special Seats-CCM) during direct question and answer to Prime minister, Mr Pinda said more efforts were needed to make the language earns more international status.

"English will remain our second language and Swahili is our first language, we must be proud of it and promote it inside and outside the country," he stressed.

The legislator wanted the government to put more efforts in promoting English language, citing an example of local universities defeats in on going Zain African Challenge programme. She therefore asked the government to outline strategies of addressing the problem

According Rev Rwekatare, who also owns a chain of international schools, lack of mastery of English language among Tanzanians has denied the country a lot including failure to secure international posts.

However the Prime Minister objected the legislator's claims, saying Tanzanians are securing international posts and steal limelight during international conferences.

"Tanzanians speak much better English than even Kenyans and Nigerians.

I don't believe that a good intellectual is the one who knows how to speak English.

"We don't need to despise our language, let's be like Chinese. There're might be some weaknesses which can be addressed but we've to promote our language," Mr Pinda added.
