Norway:

Agreement reached for

new police work order

After months of wrangling and negotiations, the Justice Ministry and the policemen's unions on Thursday reached an agreement for a new work order for the police, at the cost of NOK 335 million.

The new agreement means that 9,000 policemen will work an extra hour a week. For this each will receive NOK 15,000 in annual compensation. This will in effect provide the police service with an extra 230 man-years.

In addition to the economic compensation, the unions and the department have also reached agreement on how to protect the policemen's free time and rest periods under the new work order, as well as regulations covering stand-by duty.
