The Oslo Police Chief of Staff, Johan Fredriksen, says to TV2 that they were aware of the surveillance carried out by the US Embassy, but that they did not consider it illegal. In a report on Wednesday TV2 revealed that US authorities have carried out extensive and systematic surveillance of Norwegian citizens.
Norwegian police say they have not been aware of the extent of the surveillance, and that what they have observed on the street has not been in breach of Norwegian law. For this reason, they say, there has been no legal reason for them to stop the US activity.
Aftenposten reported Saturday that the group which carried out the surveillance on behalf of the US Embassy, were able to obtain central information from the Police National Register of Convictions.
The Group, reportedly made up of retired top police officers, have been able to obtain the information through former colleagues in the Norwegian police, the newspaper writes.
