We strongly condemn the attack against Tanzania Editors Forum Chairman and Group Managing Editor of New Habari Corporation Absalom Kibanda on the evening of Tuesday, March 5. We also welcome reports that this crime will be investigated by Tanzania's law enforcement agencies to identify a motive and the perpetrators. A free, independent media is fundamental to any democracy. The work of journalists is essential to educate the public and to encourage the free flow of ideas in society. Therefore attacks against media professionals threaten the very foundation of democracy. We call for a thorough investigation, arrest, and prosecution of those involved in this crime.
