Police are investigating several tips from passengers on board a vessel bound for Denmark, who claim they saw the husband of a 19-year-old woman murdered in Oslo earlier this week. He's the chief suspect.

An international arrest warrant has been issued for 27-year-old Yafet Kassa Gerbrewold, a citizen of Ethiopia. His wife, who also has roots in Ethiopia but is a Norwegian citizen, was found dead in a student housing complex in Oslo early Monday.

She's believed to have been killed Sunday evening, and her husband disappeared. Police now think he fled Norway Sunday night on board the Stena Saga, which sails between Oslo and Fredrikshavn on the northern tip of Denmark.

Residents of the student housing complex have reported hearing screams from the flat the couple shared at about 6:10pm Sunday. The Stena Saga sailed at 7:30pm. Police weren't alerted to the murder until 1am on Monday.

"It's possible he's fled further," Grete Lien Mettlid of the Oslo Police District told Aftenposten.no. "There are many possibilities from Denmark and further in Europe."

Mettlid said police now believe they know how events unfolded, and what the motive was, but don't want to elaborate.

There were other reports that the suspect wanted to travel home to Ethiopia in the weeks before the murder. His whereabouts on Thursday remained unknown.
