Increasing number of asylum seekers to Norway
The number of asylum seekers arriving in Norway has increased markedly over the past few months. Not since 2004 has the number been as high as now.
Over the past few years, the number of asylum seekers arriving in Norway has been between 15 and 20 a day, according to the Immigration Directorate (UDI).
However, over the past few months this number has doubled, and the UDI is not sure why.
UDI director Ida Boerresen says her office is now working around the clock in order to cope with the applications.
They are also short of accomodation at the reception centers, and the UDI is appealing to municipalities to provide space for up to 2000 new arrivals.
Most of the new asylum seekers come from Iraq, Eritrea, Kosovo and Czechenia.
