The prince is participating as a regular officer in the 2nd Battalion, which is part of the Brigade Nord.
Crown Prince Haakon arrived in Troms, one of Norway’s most northern provinces, five days ago, but his travels have been held very secretive, in accordance with the royal family’s wishes.
Haakon is educated as an officer in the Norwegian Navy and has served time aboard missile torpedo boats.
This year’s winter exercises in inner Troms have been cut back for economical reasons and are much less extensive than usual.
The huge planned "Cold Response" exercise was cancelled and replaced by several smaller exercises.
The Crown Prince is participating in the "Nordlys" exercise and is reportedly not receiving any special treatment during the 10 days of the exercise.
Norwegian King Harald has always shown a keen interest in the military activities in the north and is expected to make a visit to observe the soldiers.
