Social networking

sites security risk

Norway's National Security Authority (NSM) is worried about the increasing number of soldiers posting pictures from their service in Afghanistan on web sites like Facebook and YouTube.

A quick search of these two popular sites returns hundreds of images and videos of Norwegian soldiers in Afghanistan and on military activities in Norway. The images show soldiers, vehicles, camps, weapons and the surrounding landscape.

NSM senior adviser Roar Thon told Aftenposten that the publication of such material was a threat in itself.

"All information has a value in our society. A professional agitator puts together information in order to reach a goal that can be difficult for us to envision," Thon said.

The NSM has reacted by launching new directives and advice regarding the handling of potentially sensitive information on the Internet.

Soldiers face potential prison terms if material they publish happens to contain classified information.

Norway's Judge Advocate General Arne Willy Dahl told Aftenposten that Norwegian soldiers can wind up in prison even in cases where they have unintentionally published confidential information - negligence is no defense.
