Lawyers seek milder
sentences for
The penalty for smugling large amounts of narcotics to Norway is today as severe as for premediated murder. Several prominent lawyers believe that penalties for drug related crimes should be reduced.A man was recently sentenced to 14 years in jail for smugling several hundred kilos of hashish to Norway. In comparison, most of those sentenced for incest and rape of children are sentenced to 4 years in jail, according to NRK.
Premediated murder is often penalised by 6 to 10 years in jail.
Harald Stabell of the Norwegian Lawyers' Association believes this is in conflict with most peoples' conception of the law.
