Justice Minister bans

bugging of private homes

Justice Minister Knut Storberget.

Justice Minister Knut Storberget, is now banning all bugging and search of private homes in cases where there is no evidence that a crime has been committed, the newspaper Aftenposten reports.

On Tuesday a formal brief to this effect was sent from the Government to the Police Security Service (PST), according to the paper.

The bugging and search of private homes by the PST without the evidence that a crime has been committed, is at variance with the Norwegian Constitution.

This was recently determined by a government-appointed commission.

In 2001, after September 11th, the police were given the right to use bugging and search in their fight against terrorism.
