Record number of asylum

seekers to Norway

The number of asylum seekers arriving in Norway is still increasing. So far this year the number is 2500 higher than at the same time last year, which was also a record year, NRK reports.

The Government is therefore introducing even stricter immigration regulations, in particular aimed at families with children and at juveniles.

The number of asylum seekers is now so high that if measures are not introduced, it could well reach 18,000 or more by the end of the year, says Minister Labour and Inclusion, Dag Terje Andersen.

If the number reaches 18,000, it will have trebled since 2006.

Opposition Conservative Party leader Erna Solberg says the Government has itself to blame for the high number.

- The Government spent the first three years in power creating the impression that Norway was a liberal nation, where it was easier to obtain asylum. This has attracted many who do not have the need for asylum, she says.
